The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the rules for obtaining a driving licence. Further, these rules are now in force. The new driving licence rules come into effect from July 1, 2022, allowing only private driving centres to be operated by the state transport authority or the central government. Every five years, the institute will have to renew its recognition To strengthen the training process, the driving institute acquires affiliation or accreditation after examining the following points by the State Transport Authority.
- At least one acre of land should be available for two- and four-wheeler training centres. Two acres of land should be available for heavy vehicle training.
- There should be a stimulating and a test track.
- The trainer should have a high school diploma and at least five years of driving experience.
- The centre should have information technology and biometric systems.
- High quality driving tracks should be tested as per the curriculum of the transport authority.
- The light vehicle training will run for 29 hours and should be completed within four weeks of commencement. It will be divided into two sections: theory and practice. The theory takes 8 hours and practical driving 21 hours.
- The training period for medium and heavy motor vehicles will be 38 hours and should be completed within 6 weeks of commencement. The theory classes are eight hours long and practical classes are 31 hours long.
Under the new licence rules, the following documents have to be submitted along with the application:
- Age proof: An educational certificate, birth certificate, passport, PAN card, or employer certificate can be submitted.
- Address proof - Ration card, passport, Aadhaar card, rent agreement, utility bill, or life insurance policy certificate can be submitted.

- Forms 1 and 1A are used as medical certificates.
How To Apply For Driving Licence As Per New Driving Licence Rules 2022?
- Visit the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways website.
- Select the state in which you live and what type of driving licence you want to get.
- Fill in the application form, upload all the necessary documents and pay the application fee.
- "Check your payment status and then click on Submit".
- The driving licence will be delivered to your home through postal service.
- To apply offline, you need to go to the nearest RTO office and fill in the form. Submit all filled forms, documents and fees.
