In Sri Lanka, curfew was imposed across the country today. Army troops have been deployed in the capital Colombo after pro-government groups attacked protesters outside the office of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. At least 23 people were injured in the attack. On Friday, President Rajapaksa had declared a state of emergency. This is the second time Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency in a period of nearly a month.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948। The crisis was mainly caused by a shortage of foreign currency, which means the country is unable to pay for the import of staple foods and fuel.
Thousands of protesters have been on the streets across Sri Lanka since April 9, as the government has run out of funds for imports. The prices of essential commodities are skyrocketing.
