What is Beam Structure, Different types of beam Structure. | TechstudiZ

Mr. Akash Pal 0

A beam is a thin structural member designed to carry horizontal loads and applied joints. In response to these weights, it develops internal bending moments and shear forces. We will refer to a beam structure as a collection of arranged beams in a parallel manner.

What is Beam Structure -

Beam structures are an important type of structural element that construction professionals and certain types of engineers should be familiar with. How the weight is transferred, these structures play a major role and ensure that the foundation of a building is firmly laid in the ground.

The most common types of beam structures include over-hanging, fixed, tragic, continuous, and simply supported beams. In this article, we will find out what is the beam structure, why it is important to understand these structures and the most common type of beam used by the construction workers and engineers.

Types of Beam Structure -

There are some primary types of beams used in construction and engineering. These beams are usually classified based on their length, balance, and cross-section and include:

  1. Continuous Beams
  2. Simply Supported Beams
  3. Fixed Beams
  4. Overhanging Beams
  5. Cantilever Beams

  • Continuous Beams -
A continuous beam Such that a beam that has more than two support, is statically unpredictable. Reactions in support of a continuous beam cannot be obtained with equations of constant equilibrium only. Each section is considered an independent beam for calculating responses in support.

  • Simply Supported Beams -
A simply supported beam is one that rests on two supports and is free to move horizontally. Typical practical applications of simply supported beams with point loadings include bridges, beams in buildings, and beds of machine tools.
  • Fixed Beams -
A fixed beam is supported between the two fixed ends. It is also called fixed - end beam or built - in beam or resisted beam. It is classified as a statistically uncertain beam, involving more than three unknowns, and the equilibrium equations of statistics alone are not sufficient to determine support responses.
  • Overhanging Beams -
An overhanging beam is a type of beam in which the final ratio of beam extends beyond the support. It is a combination of both a bracket and a simple supported beam. Overhanging beams are commonly used to create balconies or corners.
  • Cantilever Beams -
A cantilever Beams is a beam that is supported only at one end, with a load on the overhanging. This is in contrast to a simple supported beam, which is supported on both ends. Cantilevers provide a clear space under the beam without any supporting column or brasing.
