In fact, one small Amla contains as much Vitamin C as two oranges. 

Given this stellar reputation, it is easy to fall into the "more is better" trap. We blend it into juices, chew on raw murabbas, swallow powders, and even infuse it into our hair oils. But here lies the uncomfortable truth that the wellness industry rarely discusses: Amla is potent medicine, and even medicine can become poison when taken in excess. 

Overconsumption of Amla does not lead to "extra" benefits; instead, it triggers a cascade of adverse reactions that can damage your digestive tract, hormonal balance, and blood health. Before you reach that third spoonful of Amla powder or that extra pickle, you need to understand the fine line between healing and harming. 

In this detailed guide, we will uncover the five alarming side effects of eating too many Amlas, who should avoid them, and exactly how much you should consume to stay safe. 

 

1. Severe Acidity and Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD) 

The most paradoxical side effect of Amla overconsumption is severe acidity. If you search the internet, every article claims Amla is a cooling agent that cures hyperacidity. While that is true for normal doses (1-2 fruits daily), the equation flips entirely when you exceed the limit. 

Why does this happen? Amla is naturally acidic due to its high ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) content. While this acid is buffered by tannins in small quantities, a large dose introduces a concentrated volume of organic acids into your stomach. Your stomach has a delicate pH balance. When you flood it with external acids from Amla, it triggers a rebound effect. 

The symptoms you will feel: If you eat 5-6 raw Amlas or several tablespoons of concentrated powder on an empty stomach, you will likely experience: 

  • A burning sensation in the chest (heartburn) that worsens when lying down. 

  • Sour belching and regurgitation of food. 

  • A gnawing pain in the upper abdomen. 

  • In severe cases, erosion of the esophageal lining mimics GERD. 

The mechanism: Excess Vitamin C is not fully absorbed by the intestines. The unabsorbed portion ferments in the gut and draws water into the digestive tract. What to do? If you experience acidity after Amla, stop consumption immediately. Drink a glass of cold milk or coconut water to soothe the burn. Never take antacids immediately after Amla, as the chemical reaction can cause gas bloating. 

 

2. Dangerous Drop in Blood Pressure (Hypotension) 

Amla is widely prescribed for hypertension because of its hypotensive properties. It relaxes the blood vessels and improves endothelial function, allowing blood to flow freely. However, for those with normal blood pressure, overconsumption can lead to a medical emergency: acute hypotension. 

Why is this dangerous? When you overconsume Amla, the vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) becomes excessive. Your blood vessels lose their tone and ability to constrict properly. Simultaneously, the high potassium content in Amla acts as a natural diuretic, flushing out sodium and water, which reduces blood volume. 

The symptoms of a crash: Imagine standing up too quickly and your vision turning black. Now multiply that feeling. Symptoms include: 

  • Severe dizziness and lightheadedness. 

  • Fainting (syncope) especially when standing from a sitting position. 

  • Blurred vision and cold, clammy skin. 

  • Extreme fatigue and confusion (due to lack of blood flow to the brain). 

The numbers: A normal blood pressure reading is around 120/80 mmHg. Consuming 50-100 grams of raw Amla (roughly 4-6 fruits) within a short span can drop the systolic pressure to 90 or below in susceptible individuals. 

The hidden risk: If you are already on antihypertensive medications (like ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, or diuretics), overconsuming Amla can cause an additive effect. Your medication lowers BP, and the Amla lowers it further. This synergy can lead to hypoperfusion of vital organs, potentially causing kidney injury or stroke-like symptoms due to lack of oxygen. 

Who must be careful? 

  • Elderly individuals (who often have naturally lower BP. 

  • Athletes or people who are dehydrated. 

  • Anyone taking blood pressure medication or nitrates for chest pain. 

Solution: Monitor your BP if you consume Amla daily. If you feel dizzy after eating it, lie down with your legs elevated above heart level and drink salted buttermilk. 


3. Chronic Constipation and Fecal Impaction (The Iron Paradox) 

Here is a biological irony that confuses most people: Amla is a laxative and a constipator. In small doses (1-2 fruits), the high fiber content bulks up stool and stimulates peristalsis, relieving constipation. However, in large doses, Amla causes severe, stubborn constipation that laxatives cannot fix. 

The mechanism of blockage: Amla is incredibly rich in insoluble fiber and tannins. Tannins are astringent compounds that bind to proteins and mucous membranes in the gut.   • The tannins precipitate (solidify) the mucous secretions in your colon.

The irony for anemic patients: Many people take Amla to boost iron absorption (due to Vitamin C). But overconsumption triggers the tannins to bind to the iron, making it totally unavailable. So, ironically, too much Amla actually causes iron-deficiency anemia while simultaneously blocking you up. 

How to reverse this: Stop Amla immediately. Hydrate aggressively with warm water (3-4 liters). Eat soaked prunes or figs. Do not take fiber supplements (that will worsen the impaction). If you haven't passed the stool in 5 days, consult a doctor for an enema or manual disimpaction. 

Prevention: Never consume more than 1-2 tablespoons of Amla powder or 3 whole fruits per day. Always drink 500ml of water after eating Amla to dilute the tannins. 


4. Increased Risk of Kidney Stones (Oxalate Nephropathy) 

The link between Vitamin C supplementation and kidney stones is well-documented in medical literature, and Amla is no exception. While natural Vitamin C is safer than synthetic ascorbic acid, extreme megadoses of Amla provide enough oxalate precursors to crystallize your kidneys. 

The chemistry of stones: Your body metabolizes excess Vitamin C into oxalate. Oxalate is a waste product that normally exits the body through urine. However, when the oxalate concentration exceeds the urine's ability to keep it dissolved, the oxalate binds with calcium to form calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals—the most common type of kidney stone (80% of all stones). 

What overconsumption does: Eating more than 5-6 Amlas daily (or the equivalent of 2000mg+ of Vitamin C) saturates your renal tubules. The crystals begin to nucleate, forming sharp, jagged stones that tear through the ureters.

  • Flank pain (sharp, cramping pain in the lower back or side, just below the ribs). 

  • Hematuria (pink, red, or brown urine due to bleeding from the stones scratching the urinary tract). 

  • Nausea and vomiting are accompanied by severe pain.

  1. Anyone with a bleeding disorder (Hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease): Amla will worsen your clotting deficiency.
