LPG Gas Price Hike 2026: Latest News, Current Rates & Impact on Your Budget

Published: March 25, 2026 | Category: Energy & Finance | Reading Time: 7 Minutes

The kitchen budgets of millions of Indian households have been hit by a fresh wave of inflation. On March 7, 2026, oil marketing companies (OMCs) revised the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, marking the first major price adjustment since the geopolitical tensions in West Asia began to escalate.

If you are wondering how much your cooking gas bill has increased, why this hike happened, and what the future holds, you have come to the right place. In this detailed blog, we break down the latest price list, the reasons behind the surge, its impact on Ujjwala beneficiaries, and expert predictions for the coming months.

The Latest Price Hike: At a Glance

The recent revision has ended a period of price stability. While commercial cylinders saw a moderate increase, the domestic sector bore the brunt of the global supply crunch. Here is a quick snapshot of the hike that took effect on March 7, 2026:

What About Ujjwala Beneficiaries?

If you are a beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) , the news is slightly better. The government continues to absorb a portion of the cost. Eligible households receive a subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder (limited to 12 refills per year). This means that while the market price is ₹913, an Ujjwala beneficiary effectively pays ₹613 for the same cylinder.

Why Did LPG Prices Increase?

To understand the price hike, one must look beyond India and analyze the geopolitical landscape. There are three primary reasons for this surge:

1. Geopolitical Crisis in West Asia

The ongoing military conflict near the Strait of Hormuz has created a severe supply shock. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage through which 20-25% of the world’s LPG supply passes. With shipping lines disrupted and vessels being re-routed, the cost of freight and insurance has skyrocketed. India, which imports approximately 60% of its LPG needs, has been forced to pay higher spot prices in the international market.

2. Increase in International Crude & LPG Prices

LPG prices are directly linked to international benchmarks like Saudi Aramco Contract Prices (CP) . In March 2026, the CP for propane and butane—the main components of LPG—rose by nearly $30-40 per metric ton compared to February. Since Indian OMCs purchase LPG at these international rates, the increase is passed on to the consumer.

3. Higher Freight and Insurance Costs

The conflict has made the Persian Gulf a high-risk zone. Insurance premiums for ships carrying LPG have surged, and freight costs have doubled in some cases. These logistical costs add directly to the landing price of LPG in Indian ports like Mumbai and Kandla.

How Does This Impact the Common Man and Businesses?

The ripple effects of this LPG price hike extend beyond just the kitchen. Let’s analyze the impact across different sectors:

For Households

  • Monthly Budget Strain: For an average middle-class family consuming one cylinder per month, the hike translates to an additional ₹720 per year in cooking expenses.

  • Switch to Alternatives: Some urban households are exploring induction cooking or PNG (Piped Natural Gas) where available. The government is actively promoting PNG as a cheaper alternative to LPG in cities.

For the Hotel, Restaurant, and Café (HoReCa) Sector

  • Increased Operating Costs: A 19 kg commercial cylinder now costs ₹1,883. Restaurants typically use 10-20 cylinders per month. This hike has led to a 5-10% increase in food prices in many eateries across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

  • Supply Shortages: In states like Odisha, the government had to step in to increase the allocation for commercial cylinders from 20% to 40% to prevent eateries from shutting down.

For Auto Rickshaws and Small Businesses

Many auto rickshaws in cities like Nagpur and Pune run on LPG kits. The price surge has significantly increased their operational costs. Drivers’ unions have been demanding fare revisions to compensate for the rising fuel expenses.

Visualizing the Trend: LPG Price History (2025-2026)

To put the current hike in perspective, let’s look at the price movement of a domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi over the last 15 months:

This data shows that while prices remained stable for most of 2025, the current geopolitical unrest has broken that stability.

Government’s Response to the Crisis

The central government and OMCs are not sitting idle. Here is how they are managing the situation:

1. Maximizing Domestic Production

To reduce dependence on volatile imports, domestic refineries have been instructed to operate at maximum capacity. India has increased its domestic LPG production by nearly 5% in March 2026 to cushion the supply shock.

2. The Essential Commodities Act (ECA)

The government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to crack down on hoarding and black marketing. Over 3,400 raids and 1,500 surprise inspections have been conducted nationwide to ensure that cylinders are available at the mandated retail price.

3. Push for PNG (Piped Natural Gas)

In a strategic move, the government has ordered that in areas where PNG infrastructure is already available, households and commercial establishments must switch from LPG to PNG within three months. PNG is roughly 15-20% cheaper than LPG and is supplied via pipelines, making it immune to cylinder price fluctuations.

What to Expect Next? Future Outlook

Predicting fuel prices in a volatile global environment is challenging, but here are three scenarios that could play out:

  • Scenario A: De-escalation (Optimistic) : If the West Asian conflict de-escalates and the Strait of Hormuz reopens to normal traffic, global LPG prices could cool down. In this case, we might see a price reduction of ₹30-₹50 in the next 2-3 months.

  • Scenario B: Status Quo (Most Likely) : If the conflict remains contained but continues, LPG prices will likely remain stable at current levels. The government may absorb some cost during election periods, but further hikes are unlikely unless the global situation worsens.

  • Scenario C: Escalation (Pessimistic) : If supply lines are cut further, we could witness another hike of ₹40-₹80 in the coming months. However, given the upcoming state elections, the government may subsidize the hike to protect consumers.

How to Save Money on LPG Despite the Hike

While you cannot control global oil prices, you can optimize your LPG usage. Here are five actionable tips to reduce your cooking gas bill:

  1. Use a Pressure Cooker Efficiently: Once the cooker reaches full pressure, turn the flame to low. You can save up to 30% of gas by using residual heat.

  1. Opt for PNG if Available: If your society or area has Piped Natural Gas connections, switch immediately. PNG is not only cheaper but also more reliable.

  1. Book Only When Needed: Avoid panic booking. The government has confirmed that there is no shortage of LPG. Booking only when the cylinder is empty prevents cash flow blockage.

  1. Check for Leaks: A minor leak can waste significant gas over a month. Regularly check your regulator and pipe connections with soap water.

  1. Utilize Ujjwala Subsidy: If you qualify, ensure your Aadhaar is linked to your LPG ID to receive the ₹300 subsidy automatically.

Conclusion

The LPG price hike of ₹60 for domestic cylinders and ₹115 for commercial cylinders, effective March 7, 2026, is a direct consequence of global geopolitical instability. While the increase puts a strain on household budgets and business margins, the government has taken steps to ensure supply continuity and crack down on illegal profiteering.

As of March 25, 2026, there is no news of another immediate hike. However, consumers are advised to stay informed and adopt energy-efficient cooking practices to manage their expenses.
