Australian cricket legend Shane Warne, who helped his country win the 1999 World Cup and was part of five Ashes winning teams during his career, died on Friday at the age of 52.
At around 7.30 p.m. India time, the world of cricket not only lost one of its greatest cricketers but also lost one of its greatest characters. Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has been found dead in his hotel room in Thailand's Koh Samui. He was 52 years old. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there was no one like Warne in cricket.
"Shane was found to be unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he could not be revived," Warne's management confirmed in a statement to Australian media outlet Fox Sports."
"The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details," the statement said.
Warne was undoubtedly the greatest leg-spinner of all time, having 708 Test match wickets. He also took 293 One Day International wickets and made over 300 appearances for Australia in all formats. Warne has taken more Ashes wickets than any other bowler in history.
Warne was named as one of Wisden's five cricketers for his unique achievements in his 15-year career between 1992 and 2007.
After retiring from international cricket, Warne doubled as the captain and coach of IPL team Rajasthan Royals to win a remarkable title in the inaugural edition of the event. A fast-paced personality on and off the field, Warne also had success as a commentator and was considered one of the fastest analysts of the game.
